Mitigate risk
Negative publicity has become one of the major risks to a companys reputation. Problems associated with the delivery of a product, service or event by a supplier will affect the service your business provides and its reputation. Media stories about child labour, poor environmental practices, lack of employee management and poor product service provision have forced companies to rethink the way they relate to their suppliers. Supply chain audits are not necessarily only for large companies. Auditing your suppliers to identify risks, then working with them to mitigate risk is good practice.
Supply chain assessment is not a new practice; there has been a dramatic rise in non-financial auditing activity throughout the supply-chain as organisations seek to mitigate risks and work with their suppliers. Quality, health and safety, environmental and sustainability performance can be improved within the company being audited only when specific weaknesses have been identified and many organisations want to “know” more about their supplier and the risks they may present.
The supply chain audit will often include performance measurement, benchmarking and improvement opportunities. Audits can be anything from a rough-cut framework to a detailed analysis of all the products and services conducted by a supplier.
